Bradford widower remembers his late wife in a song this Christmas.

Michael Mcalpine sadly lost his wife Nicky on the 10th January 2024. It has been a tough year for Michael processing his grief, one thing that really helped him was writing a song in memory of Nicky with the support of The Swan Song Project. Micheal said

“I found it difficult to put into words how I was feeling and get out the emotions. It helped me get them out on paper and into a song to express how much Nicky my wife meant to me and still does.I felt like I was doing it in honour of Nicky, and I’m sure she would have loved it”

The song is called “Take Me Home” and is inspired by “Vincent” by Don Mclean which was one of Nicky’s favourite songs. Michael wrote the song with the help of local charity The Swan Song Project that specialises in helping bereaved and terminally ill people to write songs. Together over a few sessions they wrote the song which Michael then sang himself in a recording session at the charity’s  Leeds studio. One of the lyrics from the song is

“You were my morning,

You’re still my favourite song to sing,

You’re the poem that I write,

You’re still my everything”

The first Christmas after a bereavement is always hard but Michael is hopeful the song will help him through. He said:

“Christmas is going to be tough this year being the first one without Nicky here but the song will bring me some comfort. I will listen to it over Christmas and feel like she is with me, it reminds me of what an incredible woman she was. It’s still very emotional listening to it.”

Michael is supporting  The Swan Song Project’s Christmas fundraising appeal to help more people like him remember loved ones in songs. The charity relies on donations to provide people with the chance to express themselves through song and hopes to help even more people next year.

“Just wanted to thank you for being around at Marie Curie hospice, my son passed away on 22 March what was going on in his head is unimaginable. I know he enjoyed writing that song which must have provided some relief for him a break from the discomfort and stress perhaps. So a sincere thank you from myself and his family I hope you can keep up this good work”

“This has been one of the best memories I can recall in a long while. I will treasure this great gift always.”
